Suzuki Music

The objective of Singing in the Suzuki Style for young singers is to keep the child’s voice clear, light and free until the whole mechanism is ready.  It is NOT to change the child’s voice into that of an adult.

The Starlight and Twinkle Songbooks are foundation books.  The philosophy is three-fold:

  1. Singing sequential repertoire develops a strong sense of pitch, pitch matching skills, and interval and rhythmic recognition.  The approach is Kodaly based.
  2. Musical elements taught at the very earliest period of musical development are absorbed by the child, which he or she will use throughout life.
  3. Presenting songs using multiple senses or “intelligences” increases the development of neural pathways in the brain enabling a child to develop the whole brain.

Some of the adjectives used to describe the child voice are free, clear, pure, natural, bell-like, relaxed, and unforced, even when the singing is energetic.  Sometimes, there is a difference in the boy’s singing voice and the girls singing voice.

Beautiful tone is the result of:

  • Good posture.  Standing tall but not rigid; a tall backbone with shoulders relaxed.
  • Proper Breathing.  Filling an inner tube around the mid-section, keeping shoulders, mouth and jaw relaxed when inhaling; relaxed jaw, throat, tongue and neck.
  • Careful Articulation.  The articulators being the tongue, teeth, lips, and jaw.  Consonants are sung energetically.  Vowels are sung TALL—pure, relaxed, and sustained.
  • Good Intonation.  Intonation is singing pitches accurately.  If a singer is listening and using the singing muscles properly, he will experience very few intonation problems.
  • Listen and Evaluating.  Good singers are always good listeners.
